American Airways Flight Attendant Fights Airline Over Face Protect – CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) — When the coronavirus began sweeping throughout the globe, a Boston-based American Airways flight attendant determined that working in a small area like an airplane required greater than the face masks that the corporate was offering.
“I took it upon myself to buy a face shield because I don’t want to potentially expose passengers or my fellow flight attendants or team members,” stated flight attendant Deidre Marie.
However American Airways banned her from sporting the face protect, telling Marie it hindered emergency procedures and would make passengers uncomfortable. She instructed them it may be eliminated in a break up second if want be, however American Airways pushed again.
The airline stated in an announcement Friday: “We’ll continue to study this issue, but our current standard is for flight crews to wear face covering and to follow other important procedures such as frequent hand washing as the most effective ways to stay safe.”

The airline stated they’re following CDC protocols that don’t require face shields. Marie stated she nonetheless feels safer with the face protect and can proceed to put on it.
“It should be a personal choice for us to be able to wear a shield as opposed to the goggles that the airline is trying to provide for us,” she stated. “Safety should come first in a pandemic like this.”
