The Kroger Co.’s QFC branch is analyzing near-field communication (NFC) contactless payment in checkout in All its own 61 shops in Washington’s Puget Sound region and metropolitan Portland, Ore.
From the pilot, QFC clients pay for their purchases by putting their smartphone or contactless chip card near a PIN pad from the checkout lane, along with payment information is sent into the terminal to process the trade.
NFC-based contactless payment types accepted include Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Fitbit Pay, in addition to mobile banking programs and contactless chip cards.
“QFC is excited to pilot contactless payments powered by NFC technology, providing our customers with an additional way to pay for their fresh food and household essentials,” Chris Albi, president of Seattle-based QFC, said in a statement. “The contactless payment solution will help make life easier for many of our customers and provide the freedom of choice among various options, including cash, debit, credit and check.”
NFC technology employs a radio frequency field to transmit information between two devices — in this situation, a mobile apparatus and PIN pad — with no physical touch. Throughout the coronavirus catastrophe, retailers nationally have seen an uptake in customer usage of contactless options as a safer, quicker payment alternative.
Based on Cincinnati-based Kroger, the QFC evaluation supports the greater than 30 policy and procedure changes that the company has employed since the beginning of the COVID-19 catastrophe to boost social distancing and guard store partners, clients and communities.
“Kroger continues to invest in innovative technologies that advance the customer experience, including our payment systems,” said Kathy Hanna, senior manager of obligations at Kroger. “Providing our customers with flexibility — whether that means having the option to choose between shopping in-store or online for groceries or how you pay for them — we are committed to personalizing their shopping trip.”
Many contact-free payment options are provided by Kroger, which sees the alternatives as supplying more frictionless expertise for clients in addition to safer options through the pandemic.
Mobile payment alternative Kroger Pay, which started rolling out early last year, is geared toward speeding checkout by firmly combining a shopper’s payment and loyalty card info. Clients scan a single-use QR code in the payment terminal to rapidly transmit their loyalty and payment card information. Meanwhile, Kroger’s advanced Scan, bag, Move technology enables users use their smart phone to scan goods with their mobile device, bag the things as they store and then cover at checkout through the Kroger program.
Additionally, online grocery store customers can place an order for pickup or shipping through Kroger.com or the Kroger mobile program. The merchant, also, also takes SNAP/EBT payment because of its grocery pickup services.
