Tim Robbins replaces Rainn Wilson in The Power, Amazon‘s new feminist sci-fi series based on the novel of the same name by Namoi Alderman.
Amazon‘s series The Power will have actor Tim Robbins replace Rainn Wilson in the streaming platform’s new sci-fi series. Tim Robbins previously won an Academy Award for his work in Mystic River and three Golden Globes for his roles in The Player, Short Cuts, and Mystic River. Robbins most recent television work was in the series Castle Rock, Here and Now, and The Brink. The Power, described as a feminist sci-fi series, will be directed by filmmaker Reed Morano, who previously directed several episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The Power is a 10-episode adaption of the 2016 New York Time’s Best Seller of the same name by Namoi Alderman. The novel was additionally awarded The Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction in the UK and The Orwell Prize in 2017. The Power takes place in a dystopian future where all teenage girls suddenly develop the power to electrocute people. Amazon noted the global tale of womanhood follows the experience of a”cast of remarkable characters from London to Seattle, Nigeria to Moldova, as the power evolves from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world“. Author Alderman is leading the all-female writer’s room to create the first season of the show and rework the story into an episodic format.

Tim Robbins is set to play the character Daniel Dandon in The Power, a role that was previously cast to Rainn Wilson last February. Robbins’ character is described as the, “self-righteous Republican Governor of Washington state” and a force that constantly antagonizes Democratic mayor of Seattle, Margo Cleary-Lopez, played by Leslie Mann. Wilson, who recently starred in Amazon‘s Utopia and feature films Blackbird and Don’t Tell A Soul, was no longer available to work on The Power when it was announced production would be pushed back several months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Subsequently, the show decided to cast Robbins for the role.
The Power is being produced by Sister Pictures and Tim Ricknell with Naomi Alderman, Jane Featherstone, Naomi de Pear, and director Reed Morano set to executive produce. Additional cast members for the show include Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge), Toheeb Jimoh (The Feed), Ria Zmitrowicz (Three Girls), Nico Hiraga (Booksmart) and Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman).
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos previously stated that the company was looking to bring in more dramas with “a global appeal“and it’s clear that The Power meets that moment perfectly, creating a boundary breaking tale of universal female experience. The Power does not yet have a set release date, but is slated to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories. Despite the show’s adjustments and set backs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, their announcement of Robbins’ involvement and continual discussions of shooting on location around the world should leave fans optimistic for the future of The Power.
