American Express Stock – Amex Is Adding Cell Phone Protection to These X Cards Starting April 1
No one likes having to deal with a stolen or damaged cell phone. If you have one of the following Amex cards, you may soon have cell phone protection.
You never know when your phone might get dropped, broken, or stolen. These situations tend to happen when you least expect them, but cell phone protection can give you peace of mind. And, if it’s included with your credit card, it won’t cost you money.
Some American Express cardholders will get this benefit soon. Amex is adding cell phone protection to 12 cards, starting on April 1. Keep reading to learn more about this perk and see what cards are included.
Amex cell phone protection
Beginning April 1, 2021, certain Amex cards will add cell phone protection to their list of perks. Other common American Express benefits include airport lounge access, a Global Entry or PSA PreCheck credit, travel insurance, and the ability to earn significant rewards points on purchases. Since so many benefits are included with these premium cards, they usually have an annual fee.
Wondering which Amex cards will soon offer cell phone protection? Here’s a list:
To qualify for Amex cell phone protection, you’ll need to charge your monthly cell phone bill to your card. You’ll be able to get reimbursed for the costs of repairing or replacing a damaged or stolen phone. The maximum liability is $800 per claim, and there’s a $50 deductible on each claim. Cardmembers can make up to two claims in a 12-month period.
You need to report the loss within 90 days, or as soon as reasonably possible. You’ll also need to prove the phone is covered and provide photos of damage or a police report. To validate your coverage, contact the number on the back of your card.
What’s not covered?
Cosmetic issues like scuffs and damage to cell phone accessories other than a standard battery or antenna won’t be covered. You also won’t be able to claim the protection if your phone is leased or rented. Finally, lost phones — including losses under the care of a carrier like the U.S. Postal Service or delivery services — won’t be reimbursed.
The bottom line
Many credit card issuers have started to include this often overlooked card benefit. It’s a nice perk that can save you money. If your card doesn’t offer cell phone protection, browse our top credit cards to find one that does.
Not all coverage is the same, but most insurance protects against theft and damage. That means you won’t have to go long without a phone if it’s out of action for a covered reason. Like the Amex protection, most issuers also require you to pay a deductible.
Don’t miss out on this valuable perk. If you have one of the Amex cards listed above, you can save money and use your card’s included cell phone protection instead of paying for additional coverage.
