(BofA) – Bank of America, JPMorgan dominate ranks of Europe’s top bond analysts
Analysts at a small group of top US investment banks have largely dominated a closely-watched ranking of fixed income researchers, as the Covid-19 crisis has continued to squeeze buy-side budgets.
JPMorgan is the number one ranked investment bank in Institutional Investor’s 2020 fixed income research rankings, knocking Bank of America from the top spot. Barclays has jumped into third place, while Citigroup and Morgan Stanley are joint fourth.
The rankings follow a tough year for the research units of large investment banks, which have battled shrinking asset management budgets, as the impact of the pandemic has hit. In May, Frost Consulting warned that the Covid-19 crisis could lead to research spending plummeting by as much as 90% at some European asset managers, compared to just before the introduction of the EU’s second Markets in Financial Instruments Directive in January 2018.
“It was undeniably a tough year for the industry but we are pleased to see that the investment management industry continues to recognise the importance of independent and qualitative feedback on sell side research services,” said David Enticknap, head of Institutional Investor research.
The rankings are based on a survey of over 4,900 fixed income specialists from nearly 1,400 asset management firms. Financial News has the list of top-ranked analysts globally and in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Each one of the individuals below ranked first in the categories below.
