As a result of the absence of large scale growth, Cape Hatteras has a number of the best staying dark night sky on the US Atlantic Seaboard and tonight is as soon as the night sky reaches its best.This day is the summit of the yearly Perseid Meteor Shower as meteors, small balls of dust particles left from a passing comet, streak throughout the skies with up to 100 meteors an hour. Simply draw your eyes, find a dark place on the shore away from the lights of villages, sit in a lounge chair or place in the sand and then find out just how many meteors you’ll be able to find until the moon climbs 12:20 am and threatens to outshine these small fireballs. Should you miss the summit, don’t worry! The Perseids will keep on streaking across the skies until August 24th.
