Covid-19 : West Virginia reports nearly 2,500 new COVID-19 cases as 2021 begins
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The first report of 2021 in connection with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic confirmed 2,486 new COVID-19 cases in the Mountain State.
The New Year’s Day report from the state Department of Health and Human Resources puts active cases at 26,143. There were 23 deaths reported Friday taking overall deaths to 1,361.
The new deaths included an 87-year old female from Marion County, an 81-year old female from Mineral County, an 85-year old female from Boone County, a 78-year old male from Hampshire County, a 79-year old male from Kanawha County, an 83-year old female from Mineral County, an 82-year old male from Mineral County, a 48-year old male from Preston County, a 77-year old male from Hampshire County, an 82-year old female from Logan County, a 75-year old female from Mineral County, a 92-year old female from Kanawha County, a 72-year old male from Summers County, a 68-year old female from Wood County, an 84-year old female from Hancock County, a 56-year old male from Hampshire County, a 59-year old male from Wood County, an 82-year old male from Wayne County, an 81-year old male from Brooke County, a 77-year old female from Kanawha County, a 72-year old male from Wayne County, a 64-year old female from Kanawha County, and an 86-year old female from Hardy County.
“To all who are grieving today: please know the sadness from the loss of your loved one is shared by your fellow West Virginians,” state DHHR Secretary Bill Crouch said. “We must continue to support each other and work together as we face the months to come.”

The state’s daily positivity test rate was at 7.98% Friday, which represented a slight increase from Thursday.
Hospitalizations continue to grow. Another pandemic high was reported Friday with 809 COVID-19 patients statewide including 211 in ICU, 102 of those patients are being treated on ventilators.
