Caitlyn Jenner this week gave her first interview as a candidate, released her first campaign video and issued her first policy statement. So is she a serious threat to incumbent Gavin Newsom in California’s recall election?
Jenner’s made a few missteps. Her first Newsom-related tweet last week was bungled. She hired Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, who may have to manage the baggage he himself brings — the former president is, after all, wildly unpopular in California.
Newsom, for his part, may have to wind his way through the state’s first yearlong wildfire “season,” a resurgence of Covid or — possibly most damaging to him — another French Laundry-style gaffe.
