Canada’s main stock index posted a triple-digit decline in late-morning trading, led lower by losses in the energy and base metal sectors, while U.S. stock markets also fell.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 100.70 points at 21,773.65.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 230.34 points at 34,490.78. The S&P 500 index was down 56.03 points at 4,432.25, while the Nasdaq composite was down 248.36 points at 13,462.64.
The Canadian dollar traded for 79.25 cents US compared with 79.43 cents US on Friday.
The May crude contract was down US$2.69 at US$95.57 per barrel and the May natural gas contract was up 28 cents at US$6.56 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract was up US$11.30 at US$1,956.90 an ounce and the May copper contract was down seven cents at US$4.65 a pound.
