Fortnite – Gardai investigating after attempted approach of 9-year-old Louth boy ‘groomed’ on Fortnite
Gardai are investigating after a nine year old child was ‘groomed’ online and an attempted approach was made.
A meeting was arranged after the man asked to meet the child and told him he’d be banned from playing the game if he refused.
Thankfully, however, a relative saw the lad as he walked towards an unknown car with a man in it last Monday morning.
The boy was stopped by his relative before getting into the car, which then sped off, the Irish Mirror reports.
The would be abductor made contact with the boy after hacking an account of one of his pals and posing as this friend.
He is understood to have threatened to ban the child from Fortnite if he didn’t meet him and the boy believed him.
Thinking he was talking to his real buddy and he was going on a surprise trip with his pal’s family, the lad was told not to tell his parents because it was a secret.
The nine-year-old left his house with a backpack containing pjs, toothbrush and teddies to get into the car the man was waiting in around the corner from his home.
Luckily, a relative spotted him and got suspicious before telephoning his mum to see if she knew where he was going.
The quick thinking male relative went straight after the child and stopped him before he got into a black car near the entrance to the Rockfield estate in the town.
The driver was wearing a blue top and sped off when he saw the adult relative.
Gardai searched all around Ardee for the car and driver but didn’t trace the suspect.
Gardai confirmed to the newspaper that they learned of the incident via Whatsapp messages and are now investigating.
A source said: “The boys family are very upset what happened. Children need to be very careful on these games.
“It all sounds very sinister. Hopefully we can catch whoever was involved.”
