Home Depot – Building Fires Break Out in Newark’s West, Central Wards
Firefighters are on the scene battling two fires that ignited inside buildings in the city’s West and Central Wards this afternoon.
According to officials, in the first, at approximately 1:30 p.m., firefighters raced to the 500 block of Springfield Avenue -near Home Depot– after receiving reports of a fire inside a large mixed-used building with a business on the bottom level.
Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy flames racing from the second floor and tearing through the roof of the three and a half story siding-framed building with fire extending to an attached building.
Firefighters were able to get inside the building and knock the fire down in under 30 minutes, with a search coming back negative for trapped or injured occupants.
According to fire officials, around the same time as the Springfield Avenue fire, calls came in reporting a house fire at 134 Sunset Avenue.
When firefighters arrive at that fire, they found the second floor of a two-story house heavily involved in flames.
Crews worked frantically to stretch several lines to the home as the fire began to extend to neighboring occupied homes on the block.
Officials at the scene struck a second alarm for manpower as they searched the home for trapped and injured occupants.
There were no injuries reported and the cause of both fires are under investigation.
