The fate of Joe Biden’s presidency hangs in the balance in Georgia on Tuesday.
He needs both Democratic candidates to win to stop Republicans from claiming a majority in the Senate and with it the power to set the chamber’s agenda.
The importance of controlling the gavel was shown this week when Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader, refused to put Mr Trump’s call for higher pandemic payments up for a vote — showing his power to suppress the wishes of a president from his own party.
Mr Biden had a friendly relationship with Mr McConnell before the Trump presidency but it will take more than this to get his most ambitious plans to the Senate floor.
