By 2021, one would think that all off-roaders would have very powerful engines to ensure drivability in all weather conditions, but this is not the case with these cars. However, many manufacturers are still holding back when it comes to improving the performance of their 4x4s.
Sure, 4x4s aren’t necessarily built with track performance in mind, but even so, the engine specifications of these “all-terrain” cars will no doubt leave you depressed.
10 2021 Jeep Compass (180 HP)
The 2021 Jeep Compass has been credited for its reliability. It’s rugged, stylish, and available in four trims: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. All trim levels are available in front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The Limited also has two versions available; 80th Anniversary and Altitude, which have unique exterior additions and a few extra attributes.
This 4×4 has a nine-speed automatic gearbox with a manual shifting mode. Its sluggish engine is only capable of doing zero to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds and completing a standing quarter-mile in 17 seconds. It produces 180 hp at 6400 rpm and makes 175 lb-ft of torque at 3900 rpm.
9 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport (246 HP)
The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a versatile compact SUV that can conquer almost any terrain on this planet. For the 2020 model year, the Discovery Sport comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 246 hp.
Even though it is 9 more horsepower than the 2019 model, it is still low compared to its competitors such as the 2020 Audi Q5 and the 2020 Jeep Cherokee. This car makes for a good daily driver as it offers a quiet and comfortable ride but, it most likely isn’t the best fit for someone looking for raw power in a car.
8 2020 Subaru Outback (182 HP)
The 2020 Subaru Outback is a mid-size SUV even though it looks like wagon a from the side. It is capable of off-road, adaptable, and has tons of space for cargo and passengers. For 2020 it was completely redesigned and given a whole new look.
It boasts an 8.9-inch ground clearance making it ideal for off-roading however, its engine produces 182 hp only and 176 lb-ft of torque. Although many drivers do not mind its underpowered engine, it surely is a concern for some considering how many competitors with more power under the hood there are out there.
7 2020 Fiat 500x (177 HP)
The 2020 Fiat 500X is a 168-inch long subcompact crossover SUV. It is available in three trims: Pop, Trekking, and Trekking Plus, and as standard, all trims are all-wheel drive. It features classic Italian styling but lacks practicality.
The 2020 Fiat 500X comes with a 1.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and has a nine-speed automatic transmission. Even though it has good qualities like a standard all-wheel-drive system, which makes it a solid choice for wet climates, it makes only about 177 hp at 5,500 rpm.
6 2020 Jeep Cherokee (180 HP)
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee is often confused with the Grand Cherokee. It boasts good off-road handling and an impressive towing capacity. The 2020 Jeep Cherokee’s Trailhawk comes standard with a 3.2-liter V6 engine which makes it capable of towing a maximum of 4500 lbs. This is impressive for its class.
However, lower trims have major drawbacks. For example, in addition to this car’s low fuel economy score, its base model, has a weak engine that produces only 180 hp at 6,400rpm. Some car enthusiasts would agree that it is not great for its $27,335 retail price.
5 2020 Cadillac Escalade (420 HP)
This car in particular is not necessarily underpowered if compared to many SUVs it competes with. However, for a car this big and expensive, one would think that its engine specifications are off the charts but no, they aren’t.
At over $75,000 for the base model, this luxury vehicle is slow and weak for what its worth. It is available in 4 trims: Standard, Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Platinum. It has a 6.2-liter gas engine that produces 420 hp at 5,600 rpm.
4 2021 Jeep Wrangler (285 HP)
For a car that is adored by many, the Jeep Wrangler is clearly underpowered. Producing only 285 hp, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler quite underpowered for its class. Drivers often report feeling slow behind the steering wheel of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler.
Even so, it is known as the go-to car for an off-road adventure. Jeep enthusiasts claim that the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is the most fun SUV to drive, even without going crazy fast. While that is only an opinion, it’s easy to see why they love this 4×4 so much. Its suspension and off-road handling are amazing.
3 2020 Volvo XC90 (250 HP)
This luxury SUV doubles as a competent off-roader. Its traction control makes it easy to handle especially on slippery roads and snow. It is available as a T5, T6, and a T8 plug-in hybrid.
The Volvo XC90 offers the best of both worlds. It features hi-tech features like a 360-degree view around the car and electronically controlled all-wheel drive. However, it can only make 250 hp.
2 2020 Jeep Renegade (180 HP)
The 2020 Jeep Renegade is Jeep’s adorable compact SUV that tackles rugged terrains and obstacles with seriousness. It provides a raw off-road experience. It is also equipped with a number of modern technological features and comes in five distinct trim levels: Sport, Altitude, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk.
The 2020 Jeep Renegade is painfully slow and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 9.0 seconds, a time that feels like forever. It is powered by a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that produces 180 hp at 6,400 rpm. Its fuel economy is undesirable and has limited cargo space.
1 2020 Chevrolet Blazer (193 HP)
The 2020 Chevrolet Blazer is available in six trim levels: L, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, RS, and Premier. All trims offer a refined ride quality and agile handling for an SUV. This mid-size crossover SUV is best suited for on-road driving but that doesn’t mean it fares poorly off the tarmac.
Its exterior design makes this car look aggressive and very much desirable; however, its styling costs the car headroom and cargo space. The Chevrolet Blazer is capable of producing a maximum of 193 hp and 308 hp for higher trims.
