While fans find themselves glued to the Cillian Murphy starred for various reasons, we find ourselves admiring the vintage cars
Peaky Blinders is one of the finest shows on Netflix. The crime drama is a fan favorite and the characters from the show are loved by one and all. While fans find themselves glued to the Cillian Murphy starred for various reasons, we find ourselves admiring the vintage cars on display, every time we tune in. Set in the post World War I era, Peaky Blinders features some stunning vintage models from the 1920s. If we were to count the number of cars on display, we’ll run out of fingers. If you’re interested in numbers, the Netflix blockbuster features more than 50 vintage cars. However, these three classic models had us completely hooked: Ford Model T, 1926 Vauxhall 30/98, and Fiat 501. While the show does feature the classic Bentleys and Rolls-Royces from the 1920s, we feel the aforementioned cars are a lot more significant to the show’s theme.
“By the order of the Peaky Blinders”, let’s have a detailed look at the best cars from the Netflix crime drama series.
Ford Model T
The “Shelby Family Car” from Peaky Blinders is a legend from a bygone era. The Netflix series has featured a number of Ford Model Ts during the course of its run. And one of them is the Shelby family’s go-to car. In the show, the Shelbys bring home the black Model T from Trafford Park, Manchester. However, in reality, the Ford Model T’s roots are American through and through. Upon its launch, this vintage Ford model was regarded as the “first affordable American automobile”. Ford launched the Model T with the intention of making car travel affordable for middle-class Americans and the makers managed to do that with great success. At the heart of the Ford Model T was a front-mounted inline four-cylinder engine that delivered effortless performance. The powerful engine was capable of running on gasoline, kerosene, or ethanol and was cooled by thermoscopic action. Cars in that era did not feature modern brakes and it was no different with this Ford classic. Its right foot pedal applied a band around a drum in the transmission that stopped the rear wheels from turning. A fuel economy of up to 20 MPG was another attractive proposition for buyers. For a car from the early 20th century, the Ford Model T’s top speed of 45 miles per hour was pretty impressive.
This Shelby favorite was America’s favorite too. To say that the Ford Model T boasts a legacy that is beyond historic would be an understatement. The Model Ts were so popular that at one point, half of all cars in the USA were these Ford classics. Designed by the likes of Henry Ford, Childe Harold Wills, Joseph A. Galamb, and Eugene Farkas, the Ford Model T was named the most influential car of the 20th century in the 1999 Car of the Century competition, ahead of the likes of BMC Mini, Citroën DS, and Volkswagen Beetle. With its total sales exceeding 15 million, it features among the most sold cars of all time. We are sure the Peaky Blinders makers must have not hesitated one bit about bringing the Ford Model T onboard.
1926 Vauxhall 30-98
The 1926 Vauxhall 30-98 is one of the most gorgeous cars that feature in Peaky Blinders. The vintage model has often been described as one of the best British sports cars of all time. The four-seater tourer was light and elegant like most of the Vauxhall classics. The 1926 model that features in the Netflix drama, was powered by an OE engine, fitted with overhead valves and a detachable cylinder head. A top speed of 100 miles per hour was unheard of back in the 1920s. The Vauxhall classic was a rare gem. Only 587 Vauxhall 30-98 models were ever produced, making it one of the rarest cars of all time.
Fiat 501
Next up is another fan favorite: the Fiat 501. This Fiat classic makes frequent appearances in the post World War I crime drama. And just like the Netflix show’s setting, the 501 has a World War I connection too. It was the first car that Fiat produced after World War I. Safe to say that the 501 was a massive success upon its launch. The positive response convinced the makers to launch sports versions of the 501. A reign of seven years oversaw the production of more than 47,000 Fiat 501 models. Classed as a “small family car”, the Fiat 501 was a steady and reliable friend for day-to-day use. The classic sedan was powered by a straight-4 1460 cc engine that worked in tandem with a 4-speed manual transmission to deliver smooth and effortless performance. A top speed of 44 miles per hour wasn’t the most impressive compared to the Vauxhall 30-98 but it was enough to convince the Shelbys. Apart from being a successful 1920s classic, the Fiat 501 has Thomas Shelby’s seal of approval.
