Super Cars – Watch This Herrod SM17 Mustang From Down Under Rip Around The Track
The limited edition Mustang with a staggering 775 hp on tap flexed its muscles at Winton Motor Raceway.
The Ford Mustang is regularly considered one of the best muscle cars ever created and that also goes for the modern iterations of the car. But one you might not have heard of is the limited edition Herrod SM17 Mustang GT, with SM standing for Australian Supercars champ and current IndyCar driver, Scott McLaughlin. This is a limited run Mustang that has a staggering 775 hp on tap that produces the equivalent of 578kW of power, which are dizzying numbers for a dizzyingly fast car.
Dizzying Horsepower Gives The Herrod A Dizzying 0-62 Time
Its 0-62 mph time is also very fast, reaching that speed in just 3.7 seconds. YouTube channel Motor wanted to find out just how quick it realy is around a racetrack. Specifically, the Australian racetrack of Winton Motor Raceway, and they put former Supercars racer Karl Reindler at the wheel of the car to see what it could do. The Mustang was put against other machines in the Motor Shootout Series. The car won the Performance Car of the Year award from Motor and was up against other award winners such as the Audi R8 Performance and the Ford Fiesta ST.
Mesmerizing Lap Shows The Raw Power Of This Mustang
The lap itself is pretty mesmerizing to watch. Karl can be heard uttering “Jesus Christ!” while at the wheel of the car and describes it as having a little bit of push in the corners. The soundtrack from that 5.0-liter V8 engine is absolutely glorious. And with nearly 800 hp under the hood, it does not seem that easy to get all of that power onto the road. Karl leaves nothing on the table, so where does that leave the car among its rivals? Well, the Mustang put in a lap time of 01:33.7. Was that enough for the top spot?
Mustang GT Ranks Well Among Its Rivals
The ‘Stang has ranked second among the Cars of the Year that have already put in a lap. Above it is the R8 Performance with the best lap of 1:32.9. Karl mentions that is a very capable car with a fantastic stiff platform. He wants another few laps at the wheel to really get the max out of the car, and says out of the cars he’s driven so far in the series it is the only one that really intimidated him!
