Sarasota home originally built for Dick Vitale listed for $3.1M
An impressive estate home with a spectacular outdoor living space has come onto the market in the tony enclave of The Manors in Prestancia for $3,100,000 and is being offered through Carol Mitchell of Coldwell Banker. With views overlooking the 12th fairway of the Stadium golf course, this luxury two-story home comes with everything – outdoor kitchen, three-car garage, elevator, gas fireplaces in three rooms, heated swimming pool with two spas, architectural ceilings, bespoke lighting, artistic landscaping and a celebrity pedigree as well. This home at 4198 Boca Pointe Drive was custom designed and built in 1992 by architect/builder Steve Lattmann for ESPN’s iconic college basketball color commentator Dick Vitale, his wife Lorraine and their two daughters.
Additionally, Lorraine Vitale collaborated with top-tier, Sarasota-based designer Anne Folsom Smith to customize the interiors with specialty features in bedrooms and baths, built-ins throughout and the selection of whole-house custom furniture that complements the views outside and are in proportion to the height of the ceilings, which soar to 24 feet in some areas of this elegant but relaxed family residence.
The etched six-panel glass and carved wood front door and sweeping staircase in the marble entrance foyer set the tone for the style of the 15-room home. The design style of the furnishings is soft contemporary.
The large white, eat-in kitchen is accented with dark granite countertops, gas stovetop, a dining bar and a combination of closed and glass-front upper cabinetry. The kitchen opens to the family room, which unfolds into the outdoor kitchen and pool area. The bright family room features a curved, marble raised-hearth fireplace that is the focal point of the room.
The owners’ bedroom suite is on the first floor and features a custom bed, night tables and headboard constructed as one unit on a raised platform. The lavish room has a fireplace. The other three bedrooms (each with an ensuite bath) are on the second floor. There’s a total of six full bathrooms and two half baths in the home.
One of the most important rooms is the one that was Vitale’s spacious and efficiently designed office which needed to be big, technologically sophisticated, and comfortable. There’s a spiral staircase in this office that ascends to the private home gym with en-suite bath.
The home is 8,000 square feet inside and there is an additional 2,300 square feet devoted to a custom-designed outdoor living/entertainment space.
The current owners, Melvin and Meryl Cohen of Skokie, Illinois, bought the house in 2003. “We were staying on Longboat Key and I saw a story in the Herald-Tribune about the house and the fact that the Vitales were selling,” said Cohen. “I am an engineer and our firm had worked on big homes for athletes who played for the Chicago Bulls and the White Sox so I was interested to see what Dick Vitale had built. When I walked through that gorgeous front door I just thought wow.” But, they were quickly impressed by other things too. “My wife and I loved the high ceilings, the fireplaces, the beautiful staircase, the big rooms and the wonderful outdoor space,” said Cohen. “This is a house for comfortable everyday living but also for entertaining on a large scale. We wanted it. A big bonus is that Prestancia is so convenient – close to shopping and beaches and about 15 minutes from downtown Sarasota. Also, I wanted to be on a golf course. Our home in Skokie has a golf course view. I don’t play golf, I just like the view of pretty green open spaces.”
The Manors is a private enclave of single family homes within Prestancia, each situated on an executive lot. Located within the 60-square-mile Palmer Ranch planned community in Sarasota, Prestancia is a gated community of homes and neighborhoods intertwined amongst two championship golf courses.
There are 14 different neighborhoods in Prestancia including villa condominiums and townhouses as well as single family residences including estate enclaves such as The Manors. The homes in Prestancia are large and most have a grand feel to them. Prestancia offers optional membership to the Prestancia Players Course with two 18-hole championship golf courses to residents of Prestancia communities.
For the first few years the Cohens used their Prestancia home in The Manors as a vacation destination because they had a teenage son in school in Skokie. When he left for college, the parents began to spend six months a year in Sarasota. “We bought the furniture and accessories that Anne Folsom Smith put into the house because everything was so right for the spaces,” continued Cohen. “We loved the interior design and over the years we added a few pieces but mostly kept everything just as she installed it for the Vitales because we admired everything she chose.”
The owners did update the air conditioning system and today there are four separate units. And they added to and re-sculpted the landscaping. “Other than that, we just enjoyed the place, maintained it and had lots of family and friends visit,” said the homeowner. “We used the elevator to bring luggage up and down. Everybody who visited us always commented on how beautiful the house and the outdoor spaces are and they’re right, it’s one of the loveliest homes I can imagine and I especially love the split-face marble used on the exterior of the house. It’s a unique feature and sets the house apart.”
But, as much as they enjoy the home in The Manors, the Cohens have decided to sell. “Meryl and I are getting on in years,” he said, “and we don’t need this big a house because we’re not entertaining on the scale that we used to. But we love the area. So, our plan is to sell our home in Skokie and move permanently to Sarasota. We’ve already bought a much smaller house in a new neighborhood where our middle son also has a home. He’ll be our next door neighbor. We’re pretty happy about that.”
The Cohen home is being sold unfurnished, but the furniture and accessories that were specifically chosen by Anne Folsom Smith and Lorraine Vitale are available for purchase under a separate contract.
