(Reuters) –Microsoft Corp is engaged on in-house processors for the servers working its cloud-computing companies and Floor line of private computer systems, probably reducing its reliance on Intel Corp , an individual conversant in the matter instructed Reuters.
The chips would use expertise from Arm Ltd, the individual mentioned, which is within the midst of being acquired by Nvidia Corp for $40 billion.
Bloomberg beforehand reported Microsoft’s transfer.
However the firm had already been working with Ampere Computing and Marvell Expertise Group Ltd on Arm-based server chips, and with Qualcomm Inc for an Arm-based processor in its Floor Professional X system.
Arm declined to remark.
Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw mentioned the Redmond, Washington-based tech big views semiconductors as a key focus space.
“Because silicon is a foundational building block for technology, we’re continuing to invest in our own capabilities in areas like design, manufacturing and tools,” he mentioned in an announcement.
