Legendary and Warner Bros. teamed up to reboot the Godzilla franchise in 2014, in the process giving rise to a shared universe known as the MonsterVerse. The property has since introduced new versions of iconic giant monsters like King Kong and Mothra in the films Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, respectively. Now, the MonsterVerse is preparing for its first crossover with Godzilla vs. Kong, a movie that pits the titular legends against one another for first time since 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla.

Godzilla (2014)
Directed by Gareth Edwards, 2014’s Godzilla finds the world in danger when a pair of enormous creatures known as M.U.T.O.s (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms) begin to wreak havoc on the planet’s biggest cities. However, their presence also awakens Godzilla, a prehistoric alpha predator who humanity previously tried to kill in the 1950s with nuclear bomb tests and has since been studied by a secret government organization known as Monarch. Aaron Taylor-Johnson costars as a U.S. Navy lieutenant with a personal connection to Godzilla, while Ken Watanabe plays Dr. Ishirō Serizawa, a Monarch scientist who’s long been fascinated by the creature.
Godzilla is currently unavailable on HBO Max but can be rented or bought digitally from services such as Prime Video and Vudu. It can also be streamed via TBS and TNT’s websites if you already have paid access to those channels.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
2017’s Kong: Skull Island is a quasi-prequel to Godzilla that takes place near the end of the Vietnam War in the 1970s and follows the scientists of Monarch on an expedition to the newly-discovered Skull Island. There, they encounter not only King Kong but also huge subterranean reptilian creatures, known as Skullcrawlers, that Kong has long helped keep in check. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the film stars Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson as, respectively, an ex-British Special Air Service Captain and anti-war photographer who journey to Skull Island, with Samuel L. Jackson playing a U.S. Army Lt. Colonel who comes to believe Kong must be destroyed.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Directed by Michael Dougherty, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a sequel to Godzilla that picks up five years after the world learned of the existence of “Titans,” which is the MonsterVerse’s word for kaiju. However, although things have been peaceful since then, the planet’s Titans are suddenly reawakened by a group of eco-terrorists and begin to destroy the world under the command of King Ghidorah, a Titan powerful enough to rival Godzilla. Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler costar as a family caught up in the battle to save humanity, with Ken Watanabe reprising his role as Monarch’s Dr. Serizawa.
