Does anyone else have the feeling that electric vehicles will boom in 2021?

Even though the market share of plug-in electric vehicles is still hovering at around only 2%, all the pieces seem to be falling into place: Tesla is skyrocketing, the national EV charging network is growing rapidly, prices are coming down, and we’re even getting EV ads at the Superbowl.

At the same time, the perception that heavier vehicles will never go electric has all but melted away with vehicle makers locked in fierce competition to produce the best all-electric SUVs, pickups, vans, and even semis. 

Let’s look at six new electric SUVs and pickups hitting the market in 2021.

1. The HUMMER EV

For years, Hummers were branded as gas-guzzling, machismo super-trucks that were almost belligerently anti-sustainable. But after shutting down in 2010, Hummer is back with two all-electric vehicles: an SUV and a pickup truck available in fall 2021. Both vehicles come with up to three motors and up to 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb-ft of torque, 0 to 60 MPH in 3 seconds, and a range of up to 400 miles. Oh, and they can drive diagonally.

price: Starts at $112,595

2. Tesla Cybertruck

Expected in late 2021, the Tesla Cybertruck will be built in Giga Texas (which is still under construction). The tri-motor model has a range of 500+ miles, 14,000+ lbs towing capacity, and 0 to 60 MPH in under 2.9 seconds. The unique exoskeleton makes it clear that the focus of the Cybertruck’s designers has been on sustainability, strength, and toughness over beauty.

price: Starts at $40,000

Slogan: Better utility than a truck, with more performance than a sports car.

3. Rivian R1S

The Rivian R1S is the SUV sibling of the R1T pickup. The quad-motor, boxy EV features seven seats (in vegan leather), 0 to 60 MPH in 3 seconds, up to 7,700 lbs towing capacity, and a battery pack option with a range of 300+ miles.

price: Starts at $70,000

4. Bollinger B2

Expected in late 2021, the B2 is described by Bollinger as “a completely badass electric truck.” It features a range of 200 miles, 614 horsepower, 668 ft-lb torque, 7,500 lbs towing capacity, and 0 to 60 MPH in 4.5 seconds. The Bollinger B2 has a long bed length that can extend from 5.75 to 8.17 feet when the rear seats are removed.

price: $125,000

5. Lordstown Endurance

Lordstown Motors’ Endurance pickup truck features a hub motor system with four individual motors located inside the wheel wells. The design team claims the Endurance has the fewest moving parts of any motor vehicle, which will lower maintenance costs and total cost of ownership (TCO). Its 109 kW battery has a range of 250+ miles on a single charge, providing 600 horsepower and 7,500 lbs towing capacity.

price: Starts at $52,500

6. Atlis XT

Coming in 2021, the 100% electric Atlis XT has a 500-mile battery pack option, a 15-minute charging time, and an option for an 8-foot bed. The XT has an estimated 1-million-mile life, a 35,000 lb towing capacity, and up to 5,000 lb payload. Available in a flatbed, service body, or dually configuration.

price: $45,000 to $69,000
