Mobile contactless payments might find a boost in the coming months, courtesy of The Kroger Co. and its own QFC division.
The food retailer said it had established an evaluation across its QFC supermarket department that permits shoppers to finish purchases using Apple Purchase, Google Purchase, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, cellular banking programs and contactless chip cards.
“QFC is eager to pilot contactless payments powered by NFC technologies, supplying our clients with an extra method to cover their new food and household essentials,” explained Chris Albi, president of Bellevue, Washington-based QFC. “The contactless payment option will make life easier for a lot of our clients and supply the liberty of choice amongst different choices, such as cash, debit, check and credit.”
The technical base for the evaluation entails near-field communication, or NFC, that is a comparatively mainstream part of customer life in parts of Europe and Asia for at least a decade, but that is only beginning to make a substantial splash in the U.S. retail sector. NFC is based on a radio frequency to transmit information between payment terminals and mobile devices like smart phones, smart watches and even wearables.
The pandemic has emphasized the efficacy of no-touch paymentson the rise ahead of the coronavirus outbreak generated food and shoppers retail employees concentrate on the health dangers of human contact through trades. The vast majority of all U.S. retailers — 58% — accept contactless cards which customers wave or tap payment terminals, according to a new study in the National Retail Federation and Forrester Research. That’s up from 40% this past year. Mobile wallets are also discovering more popularity, together with 56% of retailers accepting that smartphone payment system, up from 44% this past year.
“Kroger has been invest in advanced technologies which advance the consumer experience, such as our payment methods,” explained Kathy Hanna, Kroger’s senior manager of obligations. “Providing our clients with flexibility – if this means having the choice to select between shopping online or in-store to groceries, or how you pay for them – we are dedicated to personalizing their shopping excursion .”
Kroger also offers the following contactless payment options:
- Kroger Pay: a touchless mobile payment solution that securely combines a customer’s payment and loyalty card information to create a faster checkout experience. Customers are provided a single-use QR code to scan at the terminal to quickly communicate their payment and loyalty card information.
- Scan, Bag, Go: the improved Scan, Bag, Go technology allows customers to scan their groceries using a mobile device, bag their own products and pay via the Kroger app.
- Pickup and Delivery: customers can place a grocery order via Krogercom or the Kroger cell program for delivery or free pickup.
