A St. George, Utah couple are facing nearly 20 criminal charges between them after police say they beat and robbed him over a five-hour period Saturday night because they thought he owed them money.
The victim was at the home of 26-year-old Georgia Brook Jones at 1238 W. 360 North when Jones confronted him, accusing him of stealing several thousand dollars from her house, court documents say.
Another person who lives at the home, 24-year-old Michael Dean Rottmund, soon arrived home and confronted the victim about the money.
The victim denied stealing anything from the home.
Both Jones and Rottmund physically assaulted the victim and when he tried to fight back, Rottmund pulled a knife and held it to the victim’s body before telling him to sit down and not to move, according to the probable cause statement. Police said the victim had injuries consistent with having been assaulted.
Rottmund then forced the man to strip naked so he could search his body and belongs. Police say Jones and Rottmund stole the victim’s cash, clothing, jewelry, gift cards, and several other items the victim had with him.
Fearing for his life, the victim tried to leave but both Jones and Rottmund would not let him. Rottmund also threatened to shoot and kill the victim if he told police, telling the man he knew where he lived.
The victim was able to talk to a relative on the phone when Jones ordered him to transfer $900 to her PayPal account.
The whole ordeal lasted about five hours before the victim was allowed to leave, but Jones and Rottmund kept all of his belongings, the PC statement says.
The victim called police who confronted Rottmund loading property into his vehicle in front of his home.
Police served a warrant on the car and home and was able to recover most of the victim’s property, which in total was valued at $3,179.84. Police recovered $1,864.84 worth of items from the car and home.
Police were not able to recover $115 worth of property, $300 in cash, and the $900 PayPal transfer.
Police did find the knife Rottmund is accused of pulling on the victim, along with a lot of drugs.
In the home, police said they found crystal methamphetamine, heroin, hydrocodone, Xanax, marijuana, multiple bongs, and makeshift pipes.
Police also said they found several pieces of paper that had people’s personal information on them including names, addresses, and social security numbers, she took from her previous job at an internet company.
Jones told police that she wasn’t supposed to write down that information and was only supposed to put it into the computer but told police that was “not how she liked to work.”
Both Rottmund and Jones is facing the following charges:
- Aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony
- Aggravated kidnapping, a third-degree felony
- Theft, a third-degree felony
- Three counts of possession of a controlled substance, schedule I or II, all class A misdemeanors
- Two counts of possession of marijuana/spice, both class B misdemeanors
- Use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor
Jones faces an additional charge — possession of another’s identity documents between 2 and 100 individuals, a third-degree felony.
