Playstation 5 – Oddworld Soulstorm Release Date Revealed In PS5 Showcase
Oddworld: Soulstorm, the long-awaited next installment in the Oddworld series, has received a new release date during Sony’s State of Play.
Sony’s latest PlayStation 5 showcase revealed that Oddworld: Soulstorm, a sequel to 2014’s Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty!, will be releasing on April 6. The upcoming title will be the newest installment in the Oddworld series of platformers, developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, which began with 1997’s Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey. A new gameplay trailer for the title was released in September of last year, demonstrating a darker take on the series’ signature platforming gameplay.
Oddworld: Soulstorm was announced back in 2016, but the game’s development has stretched all the way into a new decade and a new console generation. The game is said to contain a morality system wherein the actions of the player, and therefore the game’s protagonist Abe, will have a direct impact on spiritual powers that become available. Unfortunately, late last year Oddworld: Soulstorm‘s release date was pushed back to an unspecified part of 2021. The delay was mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the studio’s ability to effectively polish the game.
Now Sony, through their most recent State of Play stream, has announced that Oddworld: Soulstorm will be released on April 6. The game will reportedly be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows PCs, with no releases on other platforms being specified. This release date announcement was released along with a new trailer for the game that gives players a better idea of what to expect from the latest Oddworld adventure. The game’s “2.9D Platforming” is meant to grant depth and immersion, and many of the special features of the PS5’s DualSense controller will be used to bring Abe to life.
Alongside Oddworld: Soulstorms’ release date, there were many other tidbits of news revealed at the most recent State of Play. Many previously-released PlayStation 4 titles will be receiving upgrades for the PlayStation 5, allowing a smooth transition for players who upgrade to the current-gen console. Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be receiving one such upgrade, titled Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade, featuring enhanced graphics and performance. Intergrade will also make use of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, and will also bring a brand new downloadable chapter to the game. Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is another title that will receive a PS5 upgrade, with similar additions such as enhanced graphics and DualSense controller features.
Oddworld: Soulstorm has been in development for half a decade, so this upcoming release date is sure to excite many fans of the franchise. The Oddworld series is a bit niche, but the excellent platforming and wacky worldbuilding do draw in a wide range of players. As the latest installment in a franchise that has survived for about 25 years, Oddworld: Soulstorm is expected to deliver exactly what long-time fans are looking for with the PlayStation 5‘s advanced hardware.
