Playstation 5 – Unannounced Games From Sega, Square Enix, & More Revealed In Interviews
Major Japanese companies like Sega and Square Enix hint at their unannounced plans for the new console generation in a string of new interviews.
The new year always brings new video game announcements for players to look forward to, and a recent string of interviews from several major Japanese publishers hints that a wave of such projects is currently in the works for 2021. It can be seen as a look ahead to the first full year of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, though developers haven’t specifically announced what consoles they’re developing for. So far, fans are more worried about getting their hands on the scarce consoles than what new games are on the horizon for it, as stores struggle to keep their units in stock long enough for everyone to get one.

Still, that hasn’t stopped some players from looking to the future of the new generation of console gaming, and 2021 already shows great promise when it comes to original titles and new entries for ongoing franchises. The list of games currently set to launch on the PS5 this upcoming year includes highly anticipated sequels like Ratchet & Clank: Drift Apart and Resident Evil VIII: Village, promising licensed games like Gotham Knights and Hogwarts Legacy, and fresh prospects like Bethesda’s time-bending shooter Deathloop. The amount of exciting news is already staggering, and now it looks like PlayStation fans have only seen the tip of the iceberg so far.
According to Playstationlifestyle.net, esteemed gaming publication Famitsu has spoken with several big-name Japanese publishers over the past few days, with them all hinting at major PS5-based projects to be announced in 2021. Among these intriguing tidbits is Altus working on a new JRPG from Persona 5 director Katsura Hashino, Sega having multiple projects that have been in the works since the start of 2020, and Square Enix planning a new title from Yosuke Saito of NieR fame. Other names mentioned in the interviews include Bandai Namco, Koei Tecmo, and Team Ninja, though the exact details of what exactly they have planned (and more importantly, when fans should expect these hypothetical games to be released) are still yet unknown at this point.
Aside from game rumors, the interviews also mention several big game franchise milestones set for 2021, including Persona’s 25th anniversary, Fatal Frame’s 20th anniversary, and Dragon Quest’s 35th anniversary, as well as a belated celebration of Ace Combat’s 25th anniversary after the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic forced publisher Bandai Namco to scrap its plans for 2020. These will come on top of other big milestone events planned by Nintendo, Capcom, Bungie, and Bethesda, meaning that 2021 is shaping to be a monumental year for gaming in both new releases and celebrations.
It should be pointed out that nothing has been officially confirmed so far and that the plans laid out by the companies in Famitsu’s many interviews can be changed at any time, but they all present exciting possibilities for players looking forward to the next Persona or Sonic The Hedgehog game, on top of any new IP that may come from these studios. As such, fans should stay tuned for any new developments from publishers like Sega or Square Enix regarding their current-gen plans for 2021 and beyond whenever they occur.
