As of this writing, we are on New Years Eve. In a few hours we will say goodbye to 2020, a year that will go down in history as the year of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Although the effects were largely negative, there were also positive repercussions. Videogames precisely enjoyed historical popularity and this naturally had an impact on the success of video platforms and the most important was YouTube Gaming, which had the best year in its history.
Through an official statement, YouTube revealed that in 2020 the platform exploded in popularity, clearly due to the confinement caused by the quarantine and other measures of the health contingency that prevail until today.
As a result, YouTube’s Gaming division generated a large amount of content that was viewed by fans. In total, in 2020 users watched more than 100 billion hours of video content, which is the same as 100 billion hours, which is equivalent to making 475,000 trips from Earth to Neptune and back! For its part, the transmission of live content or streaming generated more than 10 billion hours of video content.
Thanks to this great growth, there are already more than 40 million gaming channels. During 2020, more than 80,000 content creators passed the 100,000 subscriber mark; 1,000 content creators surpassed 5 million subscribers, and 300 reached 10 million followers.

Minecraft was the most viewed on YouTube in 2020
The most interesting thing is that YouTube also revealed the statistics of the most viewed on the platform in terms of video game content. And it is definitely striking that, despite having debuted more than 10 years ago, Minecraft has managed to stay current. We say this because the Microsoft franchise is the most popular on YouTube, as videos related to it generated 201 billion views, far apart from second place Roblox, which generated 75 billion views.
To give you an idea of the power that Minecraft had this year, YouTube exposed the case of the content creator Dream (which focuses its content on this series, with 112 videos on its channel), which went from having 1 million subscribers in YouTube to 15 million subscribers moments before the end of the year, which is incredible growth.
Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V and Free Fire also appear in the list of the 5 most viewed games on YouTube during 2020. Precisely, this mobile title, developed by Garena, shows with these figures that it is a worldwide phenomenon, since it managed to be just behind Roblox, in position 3, even surpassing Fortnite.
In case you missed it: Minecraft was also one of the most watched of the year on Twitch.
