Rig Stock – Suncor, Transocean Fined for Discharge of Drilling Fluid in April 2018
Suncor Energy and Transocean Canada Drilling Services have each been fined in relation to the discharge of drilling fluid from the Transocean Barents drill rig in April of 2018.
Offshore regulator, the C-NLOPB has determined that the spill was a breach by Suncor and the drilling contractor Transocean Canada of their obligations under the Atlantic Accord Act and a violation of existing regulations.
The spill on April 27 of 2018 involved some 28,000 litres of synthetic drill mud from the Transocean Barents.
There were no injuries or observed impacts to marine life as a result.
As the operator, Suncor was fined $40,000 while Transocean Canada was fined $52,000 after a review of the original Notices of Violation for $64,000 was issued by the C-NLOPB.
