VIR Stock – Brazil’s Bolsonaro says aid for the poor to rise to 300 reais
SAO PAULO, June 16 (Reuters) – Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro said in an interview on the Record TV channel late on Tuesday that the government would raise the welfare program monthly payments to 300 reais ($59.48) from the current 190 reais starting in December.
If confirmed, the rise would be higher than one under consideration at the Economy Ministry.
Officials were considering a raise in the Bolsa Familia program to 250 reais.
Bolsonaro, whose popularity has plummeted during the coronavirus crisis, said the higher-than-expected increase in the Bolsa Familia is necessary to compensate for food inflation.
The Economy Ministry did not immediately respond a Reuters request for comment.
