Hospital operator Bassett Healthcare Network of Cooperstown, New York, works with Optum on the hospital’s clinical and operational performance to deliver quality, affordable healthcare for patients across central New York.
Optum will provide the Bassett Healthcare Network with a range of services, including revenue cycle management, advanced data and analytics, and information technology, to improve the quality of care and the patient experience.
The relationship, according to the healthcare system, is designed to give Bassett the operational skills and financial resilience to meet the changing needs of the target audience. It also positions the organization for potential further growth opportunities while remaining an independent, locally governed healthcare system.
WHAT’S THE IMPACT?
Part of the collaboration involves improving business processes through advanced technology and insights that Bassett said would enable them to focus more on patients.
To that end, the partnership will add tools and strategies to the mix ranging from planning and maintenance navigation to payment resolution. Bassett will be able to use Optum’s analytical capabilities, and access to this data is expected to result in more cost-effective maintenance. The collaboration includes ongoing investments in these advanced analytical approaches.
Efforts are also being made to modernize the processes of the sales cycle, improve administrative efficiency and ensure transparent billing.
Some of the IT strategies implemented in the healthcare sector include improving infrastructure and network security in all of the hospitals in Bennett’s network.
“Optum’s size and range of resources strengthen our ability to provide unmatched care to our local communities,” said Dr. Tommy Ibrahim, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bassett Healthcare Network. “Building on our long history of strategic relationships, our collaboration with Optum will create career opportunities for our employees and provide Bassett with leading innovations and expertise that will significantly modernize and improve patient experience and access to clinical services. This will also enhance our capabilities with other healthcare providers in the area to work together to better care for patients in Central New York. ”
Around 500 Bassett employees performing in-scope roles will have the option to move to Optum, where they will have access to new technology and skills development opportunities, according to the system.
THE BIGGER TREND
This isn’t the first partnership or acquisition Optum has pursued this year as UnitedHealth’s subsidiary for information and technology-enabled health services announced in March its intention to win Massachusetts-based Atrius Health for an undisclosed amount .
With the acquisition of Atrius, Optum expands its presence in Massachusetts to expand its network of doctors.
However, not all steps were completely successful. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it was conducting an investigation into the UnitedHealth Group’s acquisition of data analytics firm Change Healthcare for $ 13 billion, sparked in part by a letter from the American Hospital Association to regulators, in antitrust concerns have been raised.
ON THE RECORDING
“We are honored to support the Bassett Healthcare Network’s commitment to delivering exceptional patient care to the communities it serves,” said Rick Hardy, CEO of OptumInsight. “Not only do we provide proven services and technology to meet Bassett’s clinical and operational needs, but we also work closely with Bassett to improve health care for the people of Central New York for years to come.”
“This collaboration with Optum is an important part of the Bassett Healthcare Network’s strategic plan and provides an opportunity for Bassett to improve our technological capabilities and modernize our support services,” said Doug Hastings, chairman of the Bassett Healthcare Network’s board of directors. “Given the rapidly changing nature of the healthcare system, Bassett’s relationship with Optum will provide tools that will enable us to serve our communities in ways that we cannot achieve alone, that are not only effective and efficient, but also safe, patient-centric, timely and improve justice. “
