CLEVELAND, Ohio – As we all retreated to our homes amid the first wave of the coronavirus we started looking for a quick, easy and – yes – comforting snack, or easy lunch, as we learned to juggle Zoom meetings and at-home school.
Americans spend about $800 million on peanut butter during an average year. But in 2020, the National Peanut Board says peanut butter sales were up more than 75 percent, compared to sales from March 2019, as people stocked and restocked their pantries with this economical source of protein.
A trip to your grocer’s peanut butter aisle can be an overwhelming experience with the large number of choices, so cleveland.com reporters Yadi Rodriguez and Brenda Cain conducted a big blind taste test to determine which brands stand out, and which varieties aren’t worth your money.

We gathered 77 different options/brands: creamy, crunchy, natural, organic, low fat, low sodium and flavored with honey, cinnamon or even chocolate. We tasted them and scored them on flavor, spreadability and texture. But unlike past supermarket challenges like best BBQ sauce, lemonade and pasta sauce, we added a twist.
This time, we wrapped the jars in paper to hide the brand names – and any childhood biases we may have developed over the years of eating tons of peanut butter.
Some highlights — and surprises: Four peanut butters in the Top 10 cost less than $2. A reduced fat jar made the Top 15. Jif flavors finished in the Top 2 spots. And of the Top 10, four are generic grocery store brands.
We each scored the peanut butters 1 to 5 (with 5 being the highest rating), then came together via Zoom to debate the merits – or shortfalls – of each one. We got a few surprises once we unwrapped the jars and revealed brands we scored high, but may not have considered during our personal shopping trips.
We wrapped each peanut butter jar in paper (and used numbers to keep track of them) for this blind taste test of 77 varieties.

While it is silky and smooth and spreads easily, we found it to be more artificial in the flavor department than any of the others we tried, and extremely sweet – almost like a peanut butter frosting. The kids will love it! Adults, not so much.

Our thoughts: Looking for a new workout regimen? Try stirring this peanut butter! After about five minutes of stirring, we were able to achieve the consistency of oily soup with chunks of pasty peanut butter, which left a coating on our tongues and a weird after-taste. Be sure to have a drink on the side when eating this one.
