Hublot – Euro 2020: Simon Kjaer is the first Hublot Player of the Round
Simon Kjaer is our first Hublot Euro 2020 player of the round after his heroics during Denmark’s sombre opening 1-0 defeat against Finland.
Honourable mentions go to two-goal strikers Romelu Lukaku of Belgium, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Patrik Schick of Czech Republic, but there could only be one inaugural winner.
A harrowing scene unfolded shortly before half-time at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium when Inter Milan superstar Christian Eriksen collapsed after a cardiac arrest.
Danish skipper Kjaer rushed to his stricken team-mate, put him in the recovery position, performed CPR and then rallied team-mates to create a human shield as emergency treatment was administered. He then comforted Eriksen’s distraught partner.
The 32-year-old’s decisive actions and bold leadership garnered global praise, with Eriksen now recovering in hospital.
A “deeply affected” Kjaer, according to coach Kasper Hjulmand, was removed shortly after Joel Pohjanpalo struck the only goal for Finland.
But the AC Milan centre-back’s sterling behaviour on a momentous day will never be forgotten.
