It’s a year later than expected, but the 2020 Summer Olympics are finally here.
And so far, it’s been filled with amazing performances and some shocking results.
The latest big surprise came Tuesday when US gymnast Simone Biles pulled out of the team competition over what she said was mental-health concerns. Biles withdrew after she stumbled on the vault, Team USA’s first apparatus of the day, and she was replaced by Jordan Chiles. The United States went on to finish second behind gymnasts representing the Russian Olympic Committee.
Biles, who led Team USA to gold in 2016, “will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
Biles’ withdrawal came hours after Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, who lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony, was upset in the third round by the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova.
Here are the most compelling photos we’ve seen from these Olympics so far.
