Zillow – Want to get thousands more for your home? Try these paint colors
FORT MYERS, Fla. — You already know that now is a great time to sell your house. The market is as hot as a Southwest Florida summer.
But a new survey from Zillow reveals there’s one simple thing you can do to make even more money from your big sale.
It turns out, a fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference. The survey specifically found that painting your bathroom light blue could earn you nearly $5,000 more on the sale of a home valued at $290,000.
“The fact that it’s one particular color making that much of a difference – yes, that is a little bit surprising,” FGCU real estate expert Shelton Weeks said.
And yet, Weeks wasn’t surprised with the survey as a whole.
Zillow found white is the preferred color for kitchens. In the living room, go with gray. In the bedroom, dark blue was the popular pick.
You’ll want to avoid vibrant, loud colors like bright red, pink, bright yellow, or bright green – no matter the room. Those could cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the sale.
“Your goal is always to put the property in a position and condition so that it appeals to the largest pool of potential buyers,” Weeks explained. “You want to appeal to as many people as possible, and make sure you don’t have a color there that some folks might find offensive.”
Of course, the survey isn’t scientific, and Weeks said each market is different, so he suggests talking with your realtor about repainting before doing so.
He also suggests pressure washing the outside of your home and cleaning the inside. The cost of doing these simple things could be well worth the payout.
“Spending a few hundred dollars on painting or cleaning up a property, it can make a huge difference in not only the selling price, but the time on the market,” Weeks said.
