Home » CEO Kelcy Warren Highlights the Importance of an Education
Imagine needing immediate medical care and being met with a vast, empty hospital. While it may sound surreal, it’s exactly what would happen in a world without petrochemicals. While oil and natural gas sometimes garner criticism, life without them would be pretty harsh. And if you doubt the truth of this statement, check out this advertisement from Energy Transfer.
Most of us, when we think of petroleum products, immediately envision the gas on which our vehicles run. But petroleum is a vital component of so many more everyday items, including lifesaving medical equipment, supplies, and medications. Energy Transfer, with CEO Kelcy Warren at the helm, is working hard to deliver these items to a world in need.
Who Is Kelcy Warren?
Warren is the current co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Energy Transfer, one of the largest, most diversified, and publicly traded companies within the petroleum industry. Yet, despite the success of his company, Warren remains down-to-earth and grateful for all he’s been gifted, beginning with his ideal childhood in Gladewater, TX. Born the son of an oilfield worker and a store clerk, Warren credits his parent’s early involvement in his life with much of his success.
“My mother served as my den leader when I was young, and then my father was my Scoutmaster. My father also served as president of the school board, and when I was in high school, my mother was president of the PTA.”
But Warren’s ideal childhood did not exclude hard work and sacrifice. And Warren’s began when he was 12 years old, hauling hay and working part-time at a local gas station. And then came college. After a few false starts, Warren eventually graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a degree in civil engineering.
Life as a Civil Engineer
One of Warren’s first jobs as a civil engineer was with the Lone Star Gas Company, where he worked as a pipeline designer. And from there, it was a steady climb to what many would consider the top. Today, Kelcy Warren is co-founder and Chairman of Energy Transfer, a company he started in 1996, and which has grown to be one of the most respected in the industry. Energy Transfer, in conjunction with its partnerships, is responsible for mining, treating, processing, and delivering petroleum products, such as natural gas and crude oil, to more than 75 countries around the globe.
Horatio Alger Award
In 2016, Warren was awarded the Horatio Alger Award that recognizes “personal initiative and perseverance, leadership and commitment to excellence, belief in the free-enterprise system and the importance of higher education, community service, and the vision and determination to achieve a better future.”
In reference to his award, Warren calls the experience, “just incredible.” And while he recognizes that his own journey has been a bit less chaotic than other recipients of the award, he’s still quick to highlight the importance of education — a belief ingrained in him by his mother at an early age.
“The young people the Horatio Alger Association are helping to get a college education have had more adversity in their lives than I had. But education is so important; you can’t have too much these days.”

FAQs About Petroleum Industry
The petroleum industry is a complex and multi-faceted industry that can be difficult for those who are not familiar with it to understand. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the petroleum industry:
What is the petroleum industry?
The petroleum industry is a sector of the economy that involves the exploration, extraction, refining, and distribution of petroleum products such as crude oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products.
What is crude oil?
Crude oil is a naturally occurring liquid found in rock formations that is made up of hydrocarbon compounds. It is the primary raw material used in the production of petroleum products.
How is crude oil extracted?
Crude oil is extracted through a process called drilling. This involves drilling a hole into the ground to reach the oil reservoir, and then pumping the oil to the surface.
What is refining?
Refining is the process by which crude oil is converted into usable petroleum products like gasoline, diesel fuel, and heating oil. This process involves separating the different components of the crude oil through distillation and other chemical processes.
What are some of the challenges facing the petroleum industry?
There are several challenges facing the petroleum industry, including environmental concerns, geopolitical volatility, and fluctuating oil prices.
How does the petroleum industry impact the environment?
The petroleum industry can have significant environmental impacts, particularly in terms of air and water pollution. Drilling for oil and refining petroleum products can release harmful chemicals into the air and water, and oil spills can have devastating effects on marine ecosystems.
What is the future of the petroleum industry?
The future of the petroleum industry is uncertain, as the world shifts towards renewable energy sources and governments and consumers become more focused on reducing carbon emissions. However, it is likely that the demand for petroleum products will remain strong for the foreseeable future, particularly in developing countries.
Overall, the petroleum industry plays a critical role in the global economy, but it also faces significant challenges and environmental concerns. As the industry evolves and adapts to changing market and regulatory pressures, it will be important to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
