Most people picture a financial advisor sitting behind a desk with spreadsheets and account statements. Tom Batterman, who spent more than three decades as a fee-only fiduciary in Wausau, Wisconsin, before retiring and splitting his time between Eagle River, Wisconsin, and The Villages, Florida, sees the work a little differently. He has often described himself as something closer to an artist.
“I felt like I was a little bit of an artist,” Batterman said, “and instead of my tools being a paintbrush in various colors, my tools were things like the tax law, investment rules, and legalities that allowed me to be creative in fashioning solutions for people and their financial circumstances.”
It is an unusual way to describe a career spent reading tax code and retirement account rules, but for Batterman, the comparison makes sense. A painter works within the limits of canvas, color, and technique to produce something that fits a specific vision. Batterman worked within the limits of tax law, investment regulations, and legal requirements to build financial plans suited to a specific client’s life.
Solving Problems, Not Selling Products
Tom Batterman’s approach was shaped early on by his decision to avoid selling investment products altogether. As a fee-only advisor, he was paid directly by clients rather than through commissions tied to specific products. The apparent loss was the product of careful tax planning, not poor performance. Batterman saw it as an example of solving a client’s long-term tax and investment picture in a way that a surface-level read of the numbers would not reveal.
A Niche Built on Creative Problem-Solving
That same instinct led Batterman into a specialized corner of the industry: managing surplus funds for small mutual insurance companies. The regulations governing this type of work are dense and often difficult to interpret. Batterman built a reputation in the field for navigating those rules effectively, work that required the same kind of careful, rules-based creativity he applied throughout his career.
Batterman has also used his background to help people outside a formal advisory relationship. He has pointed to smaller examples, like researching a state’s car titling laws for a neighbor, as evidence of the same underlying habit: taking on a problem, understanding the framework that governs it, and working out a solution within those boundaries.
Batterman has said he was never inclined to promote himself or highlight his own accomplishments.
