Football is arguably the most popular sport in the world. However, it is not the national sport of every country and it is still trying to establish itself among many factions of sports fans. In America, for example, the sport still struggles to get a stronghold of the sporting world with the likes of basketball, baseball, American football and ice hockey all taking the people’s preference.
However, many football fans out there struggle to get behind their countries’ teams because they think the standard is not that good. This is why they look to England which has been heralded as the best leagues in the world; particularly the Premier League and the Championship.
With many of the best players playing in England, it is no wonder that people want to follow the most entertaining sport from English teams.
If you are new to football or looking to support an English football team then here are some things to consider before making your decision.
The best team in the country
You might decide that when you watch football you want to support a side that might well win the league and the cups that are available. Currently, in England, Manchester City and Liverpool are the two dominant teams around. The two North West sides split the League, League Cup and FA Cup between them. Liverpool and Manchester City also have two of the best managers in the world in Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.
It is certainly less hurt to support these two than any other club at the moment. However, just behind these two are Chelsea. The London club are able to challenge for the title, play entertaining football and win cups.
Historical clubs
England is filled with history when it comes to football as the sport, we know today was fully invented in the country. With rules put in place and a league system established in 1888, clubs have been established creating history for different areas of England.
In the Premier League, clubs like Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa have all had periods of success in Europe and in England having won European Cups or League titles. From these eras, fans across the world have set up supporters groups for other fans in their area to meet up and watch the games.
It would not be uncommon to find a group of Leeds United fans in Copenhagen descending onto a bar and enjoying the game as a group.
The biggest club in the world
At one point there was only really one side that anybody in the UK or even abroad wanted to support in the Premier League and that was Manchester United. They have won the most English-based trophies, Liverpool better them on European Cups, and in the modern Premier League era, they have 13 Premier League titles.
They may no longer be winning league titles or cups as often but they are still one of the biggest clubs in the world and the most followed club. Want some pain and frustration but some of the best highs, they support United.
Happy with sporadic success
There are many clubs in the Premier League that provide joy over time but have some of the best clubs still. The likes of West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City are now well established in the Premier League, Leicester even won it in 2015/16, meaning they are incredibly competitive against some of the bigger sides in the league.
City-based choice
On your travels, you might come to England and associate yourself with a city which means you want to divulge yourself in the city even more. Cities in England like Manchester, Liverpool and London have several clubs in the city.
However, many cities like Newcastle have just one club and it is the heart and soul of the city. Newcastle United have one of the most passionate fan bases with the stadium pumping every Saturday that “The Toon” are playing.
The Premier League might not be your choice
There are many hipsters out there that feel like the top league is too mainstream, they usually look at these teams when putting their football accumulator bet via newbettingsites.uk. The Championship can provide some, if not more, entertainment than the Premier League with amazing clubs in the division such as Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United.
However, there are still two more leagues for fans to follow with the hope of their side rising up the leagues quite quickly. Lower league sides such as Bradford City, Swindon Town, Bolton Wanderers, Derby County and Ipswich Town have all featured in the Premier League.
Amazing colour kits
Sometimes just amazing kits are all you need. Great colours of kits can really make you stand out and impress your friends. Its a great way to just find a side that might be anywhere in the English pyramid system.
Plymouth Argyle play in all green, Bristol Rovers in blue and white, Harrogate Town in yellow and Blackpool in the famous tangerine.
