Summer is almost here, and you might be freaking out because you feel underprepared. Fear not. The first thing to remember is that the “perfect beach body” is your body, in a swimsuit. Period. Now, it’s still early enough that you can start adding summer wardrobe essentials a little at a time. Then, by the time the hot sun and the first trip to a cool body of water arrives, you’ll be ready.
1. Swimwear
Of course, swimwear has to be first on the list. Swimwear can be tricky to choose because you want to feel great under the sun. You don’t want to feel like you’re constantly sucking in your belly, pulling at tight seams, or adjusting straps. Whether you go for a one-piece or a two-piece, it’s important you find the suit that will fit your body in a way that reminds you to love it.
Choose a bathing suit that’s your size. Don’t go too large, or you’ll fall out of it. Don’t go too tight, or you’ll be uncomfortable. Also choose a color that flatters you. Finally, don’t forget period swimwear, so you never worry about getting caught unawares on the beach.
2. Breathable Undergarments
Speaking of getting caught unawares, you’ll also want to have period underwear on hand, along with summer sets of bras and panties. There are few things worse than sitting in the heat in fabrics that only make you hotter.
Look for bras and panties in breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk. They’ll help keep you cool under your clothes, and you won’t rush home a sweaty mess. They can also add comfort and confidence to your day, regardless of how hot it is outside. Great undergarments are like your first layer of cool.
3. Sandals
Everyone needs at least one pair of sandals for the summer, and you probably need two or three. Your feet are one of the parts of your body that tend to influence the rest of your body. So, if your feet are hot, you’ll start to feel hotter faster. The same is true of cold feet.
Before summer arrives, choose a pair of pretty, comfortable sandals in a neutral color that can go with most of your existing outfits. Those will get you started. Then, you can plan to shop for more sandals while on vacation or as the weather warms up.
4. Hats
Hats serve the dual function of keeping you cool, keeping your face out of the sun, and making you look amazing. The skin on your face is so precious, and can be damaged so easily, that it’s important to protect it. A hat will do this job to perfection, often protecting the back of your neck, too.
If you’re not used to wearing hats, consider your existing sense of style and choose one to match. There are tons of options to choose from — cowboy hat, baseball hat, fedora, gardening hat. Pick the one you love and run with it. If you hate it, you can always try another style later.
5. Sunglasses
Speaking of protecting your precious face, sunglasses will help shield your eyes from the burning hot sun. Especially when you’re sitting in front of a body of water, the sun can reflect off and literally burn your eyes. Ouch!
Sunglasses will offer both style and protection, so you can feel safe behind your shields and look amazing while doing so. Like with hats, sunglasses come in many styles, shapes, and colors. Go shopping in person and try on several pairs before settling on your favorite. Consider bringing a loving but honest friend to help you pick.
6. Shorts, Tanks, Jumpers, and Dresses
This one feels obvious, but it’s still worth mentioning. Starting now, choose classic summer pieces to add to your wardrobe. Find high-quality fabrics in brands you feel good about, so you can wear these clothes for a decade or more to come.
At the most basic level, you’ll need shorts, tank tops, jumpers, and dresses. Again, head out and shop in person, so you can choose fits and styles you love. Some people love short shorts while others feel better in board shorts. The same rule applies to tank tops, crop tops, halter tops, and all kinds of dresses and jumpers. The idea is to find clothes you feel good in.
7. A Great Towel
Yes, a towel is absolutely a part of your wardrobe. Picture yourself poolside, laying down your beach read on the table, next to your iced tea. You’ll want to have a stylish towel to spread out on the lounger. The one that says, “This is my vibe.”
You might choose a giant, oversized towel in a cool pattern. Or, maybe you’ll want a thin, linen towel that shows off your eco-friendly nature. You might also choose the towel based on your weather. If it’s super hot, you’ll want a thinner material. In cooler, breezier climates, a fluffy towel might hit the spot.
8. The Perfect Bag
Finally, you’ll need the perfect bag to throw everything inside of. After all, you don’t want to be the frazzled, harried person trekking across the beach with arms full of towels and lotions and books. Even the most oversized bag can look glamorous and effortless strung over your shoulder.
So, choose a breathable bag that will hold all of your beach essentials. If you’re a parent, you might need two. Make sure it’s large enough to house towels, sunscreen, your beach read, water bottles, and snacks. Also, consider a knitted fabric so sand and dirt can easily escape.
Of course, there are plenty of other items to have on hand for the summer. You’ll want a folding chair, a reusable water bottle, and maybe a cooler, to say the least. But once you’ve got your wardrobe down, the rest kind of falls into place. Because you’ll be looking amazing, and feeling the same, as you lug your summer items around.
