FintechZoom > World Indices > US Indices > INDEXDJX: .DJI Today: Dow Falls 218 Points as Yields Near 5% and Triple Witching Looms

Session report, Friday 18 September 2026. Figures as at 11:10 AM EDT, ahead of the 4:00 PM close.

Highlights

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded at 51,560.04 by late morning on Friday, down 218.00 points or 0.42%.
  • INDEXDJX: .DJI is not a company or a tradable security, it is the Google Finance identifier for the Dow, combining the exchange code with the index ticker.
  • The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4% on Wednesday, its first increase in three years.
  • Wednesday’s session saw the Dow drop 631.20 points, or 1.21%, to close at 51,461.90, dragged down by financial services stocks.
  • The 10 year Treasury yield rose again on Friday and sits just below 5%, having hit its highest level since 2023 earlier in the week.
  • Brent and WTI crude are hovering around $100 per barrel after easing overnight, keeping inflation firmly in view.
  • Today is triple witching, the quarterly expiry of index futures and options, which typically produces heavy volume and sharp swings in the final hour.
  • The Bank of Japan raised rates to their highest level in 31 years, adding to a week of global monetary tightening.

Anyone searching the string INDEXDJX: .DJI is usually doing one of two things: looking up the Dow’s current level, or trying to work out what that odd ticker actually means. This piece covers both, starting with where the index stands right now.

Where the Dow Stands Today

By 11:10 AM Eastern on Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was quoted at 51,560.04, down 218.00 points on the session, a fall of 0.42%. That implies a previous close in the region of 51,778.

The broader market was mixed rather than uniformly weak. The S&P 500 was down around 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite hovered near flat, having swung between modest gains and losses through the morning. The Dow’s underperformance points to weakness concentrated in its specific constituents rather than a market wide retreat.

Putting the week in context

Wednesday was the week’s defining session. The Dow shed 631.20 points, or 1.21%, closing at 51,461.90 after the Federal Reserve raised rates. Losses were led by financial services names. The S&P 500 fell 0.45% and the Nasdaq Composite finished close to unchanged, so again the Dow took the heaviest damage.

Thursday brought a recovery across risk assets, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting what Bloomberg described as their best day since early August. That rally carried into Asian trading overnight, where MSCI’s Asian equities gauge rose 0.8%.

What INDEXDJX: .DJI Actually Means

The string is a Google Finance identifier, not an official ticker in the way AAPL identifies Apple. It breaks into two parts.

INDEXDJX designates the index family, in this case Dow Jones indices. The suffix .DJI is the specific index code for the Industrial Average. Other data providers use different conventions for the same index: Yahoo Finance uses ^DJI, CNBC uses .DJI on its own, Barchart uses $DOWI, and some platforms use DJIA or US30.

Why you cannot buy it

An index is a calculation, not an asset. INDEXDJX: .DJI has no shares, no order book and no price you can transact at. Exposure is gained through instruments that track it, such as ETFs, index futures, options or contracts for difference.

The price weighting quirk

The Dow is one of the few remaining price weighted indices. A constituent’s influence depends on its share price, not its market capitalisation. A company trading at $500 per share moves the index ten times as much as one trading at $50, regardless of which business is larger.

This is why the Dow can diverge sharply from the S&P 500 on the same day, as it did on Wednesday. It is also why the index contains only 30 companies while the S&P holds 500, and why many professionals treat the S&P as the better read on US equity market health.

What Is Moving the Market

DriverDirectionDetail
Fed rate decisionNegativeFirst increase in three years, 25 basis points, to a 3.75% to 4% range
Fed forward guidanceNegativeMedian FOMC projections point to one or two further increases
10 year Treasury yieldNegativeRose again Friday, sitting just below 5% after hitting its highest since 2023
Oil pricesMixedBrent and WTI around $100 per barrel, easing overnight but still elevated
Bank of JapanNegativeRaised rates to a 31 year high, tightening global liquidity further
SemiconductorsPositiveChip stocks rebounded from an earlier sell off, though the PHLX Semiconductor index remains down 1% on the week
Nvidia outlookPositiveA bullish forecast lifted chipmakers across Asia overnight
AI sentimentNegativeConcerns over artificial intelligence capabilities weighed on sentiment
NetflixNegativeShares dragged in premarket trading
Triple witchingTechnicalQuarterly expiry of index futures and options, concentrated in the final hour

Rates are doing the damage

The Fed’s move was widely anticipated, so the decision itself was not the problem. What is weighing on equities is the guidance. Median projections from FOMC members point to one or two further increases, and the central bank is explicitly trying to contain inflationary pressure driven by oil above $100 per barrel.

The 10 year Treasury yield is the mechanism. It touched its highest level since 2023 earlier in the week and remains just under 5%. At those levels, bonds compete directly with equities for capital, and valuations across the market come under pressure. Current levels across the curve are tracked on the bonds and rates page.

Why the final hour will be noisy

Today is the third Friday of the quarter, which means triple witching: index futures, index options and single stock options all expire on the same day. Volumes rise as positions are rolled or closed and hedges are unwound.

Market commentators have been explicit that this is mechanical activity and should not be read as a change in the fundamental view. If Friday’s close is volatile, the sensible response is to discount it rather than interpret it.

Summary Keys

  • The Dow traded at 51,560.04 at 11:10 AM EDT on Friday, down 218.00 points or 0.42%.
  • Wednesday’s close of 51,461.90 followed a 631.20 point drop, with financial services leading the losses.
  • INDEXDJX: .DJI is Google Finance’s identifier for the Dow, equivalent to ^DJI on Yahoo Finance and $DOWI on Barchart.
  • The index is price weighted, so high priced shares carry disproportionate influence regardless of company size.
  • The Fed raised rates 25 basis points to a 3.75% to 4% range and signalled further increases ahead.
  • The 10 year Treasury yield just below 5% is the principal headwind for equity valuations.
  • Oil around $100 per barrel is the inflation pressure the Fed is responding to.
  • Triple witching will distort the final hour, so the closing level carries less signal than usual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I invest directly in INDEXDJX: .DJI?

No. It is an index calculation rather than a security, so there are no shares to buy and no price at which you can transact. Exposure comes through tracking instruments: ETFs that replicate the index, futures contracts, options, or contracts for difference. Each carries different costs, tax treatment and risks, and none of them delivers exactly the index return once fees and tracking differences are accounted for.

Why did the Dow fall more than the S&P 500 and Nasdaq this week?

Because of price weighting and composition. The Dow holds 30 companies weighted by share price, so a handful of high priced constituents drive most of its movement. Wednesday’s losses were concentrated in financial services, which carry meaningful weight in the Dow. The S&P 500 spreads the same exposure across 500 companies weighted by market capitalisation, and the Nasdaq Composite is dominated by technology, which held up better.

Should I read anything into Friday’s closing level?

Treat it cautiously. Triple witching produces heavy volume and sharp swings, particularly in the last hour, as expiring derivatives positions are settled and hedges unwound. These flows are mechanical and reflect contract expiry rather than any reassessment of company fundamentals or economic conditions. A large move on a witching day is rarely a reliable directional signal.
